The present invention relates to natural brassinosteroids and derivatives thereof as well as pharmaceutical compositions containing the brassinosteroids and their derivatives for use in the treatment of mammalian cells, various states of growth reduction or completely inhibition of cell proliferative capacity. The invention also relates to the method of stopping cell cycle using the brassinosteroids inducing apoptic changes in tumor cells.
