The present invention relates to natural brassinosteroids and derivatives thereof and pharmaceutical compositions containing them for use in the treatment of mammalian cells, various conditions of reduced growth or complete inhibition of cell proliferation capacity. The invention also includes stopping the cell cycle with natural brassinosteroids leading to apoptotic changes in tumor cells. Further, the present invention relates to the use of brassinosteroid for the treatment of adverse effects of hyperproliferation in mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo.
