A method for the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BPD) in a subject and/or of Li-responsiveness in a patient with BPD, comprising the steps of: (a) determining the IMPase level (IMPLEV) of the subject; (b) (i) determining whether said IMPLEV is lower than the IMPLEV of healthy subjects (n-IMPLEV), and (ii) if said IMPLEV is lower than the n-IMPLEV, diagnosing the subject as suffering from BPD; and/or (c) (i) determining whether said IMPLEV of a BPD patient is lower than the IMPLEV of non-Li-responsive patients (non-IMPLEV), and (ii) if said IMPLEV is lower than the non-IMPLEV, diagnosing the subject as Li-responsive.
