PURPOSE: To measure a fine difference in a crystal orientation nondestructively by a method wherein burst wave pulses whose beam size is smaller than twice the thickness of a steel plate to be measured, which have a plurality of waves and whose excitation frequency is constant are made incident on the steel plate to be measured and the amplitude of interference multiple reflected waves from the steel plate is detected. CONSTITUTION: An excitation frequency (f) from a PbTiO3 oscillator (Q value = 500) at an ultrasonic transmitting and receiving element 12 which is mounted on a two-directional scanning mechanism 14 is changed 18 to, e.g. 15.5MHz, 15.7MHz and 15.9MHz. Burst wave pulses whose beam diameter is about 250m and which are composed of 10 waves are made incident on the surface of an oriented electromagnetic steel plate 10, to be measured, (plate thickness change t=5m; surface roughness Ra=0.5m) whose size is, e.g. 1530mm, whose plate thickness is, e.g. 0.20mm and which is being secondary-recrystallized. Then, interference multiple reflected waves between the surface and the rear surface of the steel plate 10 are received by the transmitting and receiving element 12, and the two-dimensional distribution of the intensity of interference waves is found. Thereby, not only an ordinary secondary recrystallized grain which is detected by a macroetching method but also a latent secondary recrystallized grain which cannot be detected by the macroetching method can be detected.
