The invention relates to a bed for patients borne by castors (17, 18, 19, 20) with a mattress frame and a bedside table (29) borne by castors (25, 26, 27, 28), special means being provided to enable the said table to be jacked up on the bed, effortlessly if possible and in any event quickly and without problems. The intention is to achieve a long stroke (H), that is to say a large free space, between the under edge of the castors (25, 26, 27, 28) on which the bedside table (29) can be moved on the floor (16), and the floor (16) itself, in the jacked-up position, so that the structure comprising bed and bedside table (29) can be easily and effortlessly moved into a disinfection unit (so-called washing machine) and sufficient floor clearance is provided for the spray nozzles, that is to say that the bedside table (29) cannot strike against the spray nozzles with its castors (25, 26, 27, 28). The proposed jacking abutment (34) and jacking bearings (43) interact so that a long or very long stroke (H) is achieved for the bedside table (29), with a simple and strong design of the equipment items provided for this purpose on the bedside table (29) and/or on the bed.
