Cyclohexene (I) is produced by catalytic non-oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexane (II) in the gas phase using a dehydrogenation catalyst contg. ruthenium and selenium on a carrier. Pref. catalyst contains 0.1-10% Ru and 0.05-5 wt.% Se and the carrier is SiO2. The dehydrogenation is pref. carried out at 450-650 deg.C using a feed of (II) which is opt. diluted with 2-20 mol (per mol. (II)) of hydrogen. The catalyst is pref. in the form of a solid bed and the LHSV feed rate of (II) is 0.1-10 g (II) per ml catalyst per hour. The present catalysts have improved dehydrogenation performance w.r.t. (II) than known catalysts.
