Photoemitter is sensitive in the optical light wavelength region and is based on a semiconductor material (I) in which electrons are stimulated by this radiation. (I) has a surface coating (II) contg. an alkali metal and O, which reduces the work function, and the (I) surface is activated until it has an effective negative electron affinity. (I) is a p-semiconductor produced from AIBIIC2VI, A2IBIVC3VI or A3IBVC4VI cpds. (in which AI is Cu or Ag; BIII is Al, Ge or In; BIV is Si, Ge or Sn; BV is P, As or Sb; and CVI is S, Se or Te). Used in vacuum photocells, photoelectric multipliers and TV camera tubes.
