Synchronization of transmission reference signals and reception allows gating to examine signals received from a specified range, azimuth and elevation and also allows the use of correlation techniques for the reception of echo ranging signals. The system may be used for passive listening. The transducer array may be disposed on a truncated hemisphere, Fig. 5 (not shown). The system may be alternatively an electromagnetic radiation system.
