The towing bar of the trailer is connected to the plate on which the trailer body is free to rotate. Under this plate is a geared ring and below this is connected the platform which supports the front wheels together with the spring suspension. On the plate under the trailer platform is fixed an electric motor which drives a worm which is engaged with the geared rim. On normal travelling the front wheels are steered by the towing bar and the slewing ring support plate. If a difficult corner has to be negotiated then the electric motor is switched on and the worm rotates the gear. This causes the front wheels to turn independently. This method is especially useful on reversing. The worm gear can be rotated manually by an assistant. A lightweight version of this steering system has a hydraulically or pneumatically operated separate steering system.
