    • 摘要: Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in pollutant concentrations exists at the intra-urban level. In this research work, the concentrations of various pollutants and meteorological parameters are characterized between various central ambient monitoring sites at Houston, TX, and the Rio Grande Valley Regions of South Texas. Meteorological (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction) and pollutant (O3, SO2, CO, NO2, and various PM species) concentrations were downloaded from the appropriate Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Central Ambient Monitoring Station (CAMS) sites for the year 2016. Correlation Analyses and Coefficient of Divergence (COD) analyses suggest that statistically significant differences occur between the various TCEQ CAMS sites in the Houston Region. Findings from this study will help the various stakeholders involved in assessing the overall air pollutants exposure burden for the local populations.

    • 摘要: 雨水管道是城市排水系统重要环节,其排水能力关乎城市内涝严重程度,因此,快速而准确地对雨水的管道疏水能力进行评估,精确定位溢水节点、超载管网,掌握内涝风险情况显得尤为重要。文中通过建立MIKE URBAN一维管网模型,在不同重现期下模拟,利用模拟结果对研究区进行排水能力评估。结果表明,研究区雨水管网整体排水能力较弱,绝大部分管段不能满足1 a暴雨重现期要求,难以抵御强降雨威胁,易形成内涝点,城市雨水管网亟待改造。该评估结果为后期雨水管网改造等工程提供理论基础。

    • 摘要: In a rapidly urbanizing world, the social, economic, and ecological complexities of cities require conceptual and operational innovations to enhance climate resilience and sustainability. We describe our Integrative Collaborative Project (ICP) approach to co-create climate resilience in the Mexico-Lerma-Cutzamala Hydrological Region (MLCHR). In recent years, it has suffered from frequent natural disasters, and under climate change scenarios, the intensity and frequency of extreme events, including severe floods, droughts, heat waves and landslides are expected to increase. ICPs are framed as socio-technical capacity building enterprises, with networks operating at multiple scales. The approach differs from other integrative efforts, which tend to be top-down with scant civil society co-ownership, and focus on limited aspects like indicators/assessment, or institutional capacity building. We reimagine all operational stages, from creative thinking, through ethos and concept, assessment, planning, project design, implementation and management, and monitoring and evaluation. The design of ICPs is informed by six integrative domains: 1) project ethos, concept, and framing;2) sectors, topics, and issues;3) spatial and temporal scales;4) stakeholder interests, relationships and capacities;5) knowledge types, models and methods;and 6) socio-technical capacities and networks. Empirically, the approach is based on participatory development practices, pilot project work tackling sustainable water and sanitation in Mexico, and a synthesis of rich experiential knowledge spanning 20 years. The theoretical basis considers a pragmatic knowledge frame, socio-technical transitions literature, and education for social transformation. We describe forward-looking operational details of the Pilot ICP for the Mexico-Lerma-Cutzamala Hydrological Region, with our three-university partnership as catalyst, and a new breed of socio-technical enterprise organization as a key partner, engaging stakeholders at municipal and regional scales.

    • 摘要: Landuse/Landcover(LULC)changes are recognised as some of the major causes of environmental problems like land degradation and climate change.To achieve sustainability,we need to properly understand such changes in order to have adequate information that will enable us to design and implementing measures to mitigate their negative impacts.Doing this particularly requires a proper understanding of how stakeholders perceive the changes in general and their drivers in particular.Unfortunately,not much is known for many areas about the perspective of landuse stakeholders on drivers of LULC changes.This paper reports the results of a study conducted to examine the perceptions of different landuse stakeholders on drivers of LULC changes in Abuja Federal Capital Territory,Nigeria.Questionnaire survey was utilised,involving 514 households across four settlements,2 rural(Karshi and Orozo)and 2 urban(Nyanya and Karu)towns in the territory,which were complimented with Focus Group Discussions were conducted.The results obtained showed that urban dwellers are largely aware of drivers of changes in socio-economic drivers(physical development on lands,more commercial complex development and more institutional development).Rural dwellers are largely aware of environmental drivers of LULC changes(bush burning,livestock overgrazing,collections of wood and medicinal plants,and agricultural expansion).It was concluded that there is the need to bring about a harmonisation of the perceptions of LULC change drivers by the rural and urban dwellers so as to bring about a common front understanding and responding to LULC changes in the study area.

    • 摘要: Background: Six in ten sexually active adolescent women in Uganda have an unmet need for contraception yet there is limited data on what is driving its use. This study aimed to determine the associations between sociodemographic factors and modern contraceptive ever-use among adolescents in Uganda. Methods: A crossectional study was conducted among 337 adolescents aged 13 - 19 years who had ever had sex in Wakiso (urban) and Kamuli (rural) districts in Uganda. The outcome of interest was the ever-use of modern contraceptives. Generalized linear models with a Poisson link were used to examine the associations between sociodemographic factors and contraceptive ever use. Results: The weighted prevalence of ever-use of modern contraceptives was 30.9%. Contraceptive ever use was more likely among the older adolescents (adjusted Odds Ratio) aOR 1.31 (95% CI = 1.06 - 1.55), married aOR 1.67 (95% CI = 1.09 - 2.58) and the less educated were aOR 1.79 (95% CI = 1.14 - 2.83) compared to their counterparts. Adolescents living in the urban district (Wakiso) aOR 0.67 (95% CI = 0.49 - 0.92) were less likely to use modern contraceptives. In stratified analysis, the urban poor were more likely to use modern contraceptives (moderate aPR 0.35 95%CI (0.17 - 0.68) ** or high socioeconomic status aPR 0.62, 95%CI (0.28 - 1.37). Conclusions: The study shows low contraceptive ever-use among adolescents. Adolescents with low education and those from rural settings were more likely to ever-use modern contraceptives. Having good knowledge of contraception and discussing sex with parents promoted contraceptives ever-use. We recommend further studies assessing barriers to contraceptive use among adolescents in Uganda.

    • 摘要: The Urban Street Segment Chapter of the Highway Capacity Manual(HCM)includes a methodology for evaluating the level of service urban street segments provide to automobile users.The methodology does not account for pedestrian activity at un-signalized midblock crosswalk on an urban street segment.Pedestrian activity at un-signalized midblock crosswalk on urban street segments causes friction conditions between automobiles and pedestrians.As a consequence,the average time it takes vehicles to travel along the segment is increased.Increasing segment running time decreases both the travel speed of automobiles and the level of service provided to automobile users.There is an inverse relationship between the delay incurred by interrupted vehicles and the speeds at which pedestrians walk while crossing at midblock.To account for this delay,there is a need to investigate pedestrian walking speeds at un-signalized midblock crosswalks.This study measured pedestrian walking speeds by age-group at two un-signalized midblock crosswalks on urban street segments.The first objective of this paper is to perform statistical analyses to examine the measured free-flow pedestrian walking speeds.The second objective is to demonstrate how the findings of this study can be incorporated into the Urban Street Segment Analysis Chapter of the HCM.Pedestrian walking speeds were recorded and analyzed for 2937 pedestrians.The results show teenagers walk at an average speed of 1.45 m/s,young adults walk at an average speed of 1.55 m/s,middle age pedestrians walk at a speed of 1.45 m/s,older pedestrians walk at speed of 1.09 m/s,and elderly or physically disabled pedestrians walk at a speed of 1.04 m/s.

    • 摘要: Building conservation’s significance has changed from preservation to being part of a broader strategy for urban regeneration and sustainability.Adaptive reuse of heritage building is a useful method to bring new meaning into a culture,revive heritage sites,which achieve its sustainability.Many of heritage conservation projects were applied due to the historical and symbolic significance they have.The aim of this paper is to investigate how the conservation of heritage buildings contributes to sustainable urban environment in Amman-Jordan.Through Shed the light on experiences of architects,they have been involved with the adaptive reuse of one of the heritage buildings(Jasmine House)in Jabal(Al-Wiebdeh)neighborhood,which was adapted into a cultural center.A qualitative methodology used depends on a field survey of the selected building,documenting its architectural features,furthermore,analyzing the used method of adaptation,as well as evaluating the impact of reutilizing heritage buildings on the level of urban development,socio-economic level.Semi-structured interview was drawn from the architect who managed the adaptation process too.
