摘要

We investigate the impact of air transport and high speed rail (HSR) competition on thernenvironment and social welfare. This depends on the balance between the substitution effectrn(passengers shift to HSR from other modes) and the traffic generation effect (market expansion byrnHSR). We endogenize airline and HSR choice of frequency and speed. We find that thernintroduction of HSR (ⅰ) leads to market expansion; (ⅱ) is detrimental for social welfare if thernairlines are sufficiently low pollutants; (ⅲ) increases the level of emissions, though HSR is greener,rnif HSR is sufficiently fast or the market is big enough.
