摘要

Large orders of long-haul aircraft underscore the expansion plans of Emirates. As of Octoberrn2013, Emirates uses fifth freedom traffic rights for Milan – New York flights and considersrnthe opening of further direct EU-US routes leading to competition with European andrnAmerican carriers beyond transfer city-pairs connecting Europe and North America with otherrnregions of the world. The paper provides an initial assessment of the market potential forrndirect EU-US routes offered by Emirates. It first describes the regulatory framework for fifthrnfreedom flights before turning to the “3 Cs” of airline network management (i.e., Costs,rnConsumers, and Competition). Consideration is also given to the fact that Emirates today isrnnot a member of a global airline alliance like Star Alliance, Oneworld or Skyteam. One resultrnof the paper is that the number of direct EU-US routes operated by Emirates will remain smallrneven with open skies agreements allowing for fifth freedom flights. Further, the preliminaryrnanalysis identifies potential candidates for such routes.
