One of the most common diagnostic tests prescribed in any medical investigation is the blood count. It involves counting the number of Red blood cells(RBCs), White blood cells (WBCs, which are classified into Lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils), platelets and haemoglobin. Measurement of RBCs forms a major part of the Complete Blood Count(CBC), as they are directly involved in oxygen transportation to various parts of the body. Blood counts are done either manually, using haemocytometers and optical microscopes or with the help of specialised CBC machines. A CBC machine consists of a LASER flow cytometer which counts the number of cells passing through a point and a spectrometer to measure haemoglobin. Other computations are carried out using special purpose processors. In this paper, we propose a system and a special purpose IC which can perform the complete blood count with simple circuitry, all on a single device.
