IntroductionThe ruminants harbor complex symbiotic microbiota which is responsible for the breakdown of various dietary nutritive components (Metha et al.,2009).The microbiota is highly responsive to changes in diet and feeding regimen (Stewart et al.,1988).It has been reported that the relative abundance of bacterial populations markedly changed with different dietary concentrate to forage ratio or forage type (Tajima et al.,2001;Vlaemincket al.,2006;Methaet al.,2009;Kong et al.,2010;Petri et al.,2012).However there is limited information on how diet affects the composition and distribution of the rumen bacterial community.Techniques of molecular microbial ecology provide an opportunity to quantify these ruminal species with great sensitivity and precision (Tajima et al.,2001;Klieveet al.,2003;Denman et al.,2006;Stevenson et al.,2007).The present study was conducted to quantify the population of rumen proteolytic and cellulolytic bacteria of Chinese Hostein cows fed forage based diets by real-time PCR.
