In this ever competitive world steel market, the key point to market share is quality and quality means stringent composition control and minimum number of undesirable and detrimental non-metallic inclusions, N.M.I's. It is widely accepted that N.M.I's have adverse effects on mechanical properties of steels in service. In order to minimize N.M.I's concentration in steels, the mechanisms of their formation ought to be understood and for that reason the following characteristics of N.M.I's are vital; 1. Chemistry 2. Morphology 3. Size and Size distribution. There are two basic methods of investigating N.M.I's; namely insitu analysis, i.e. metallography, and separate study, i.e. extraction of N.M.I's. The current article considers insitu analysis of inclusions while the second article reports some works on the electrolytic extraction of N.M.I's. The concept of steel cleanliness is of great importance particularly in case of sheets and coils used in automotive industry and home appliance production. The sheet metals are expected to have good surface finish and high ductility and formability. Sheet metals may also be used in building industry for roofing applications and is generally in a corrugated form. Therefore, the capability of the steel to corrugation is very crucial and is directly related to the surface quality and internal cleanliness of the steel. Further more, since the final rolling pass and corrugation operation are carried out at room temperature, the presence of N.M.I's exacerbates the critical issue of quality.
