"Micro-organisms" are one of major constraints in cane deterioration after harvest which leads to sucrose loss with formation of metabolites like polysaccharides-dextran and levan, formaldehydes, ethanol, acids etc. which affect various stages of processing in factory. To control microflora and their ill effects. factories are using various types of biocides but their effects on microbe population are not generally properly estimated. To assess the effectiveness of these commercially available biocides, a study was conducted by Vasantdada Sugar Institute at Pandurang S.S.K. Ltd, Shreepur, Dist-Solapur during 2001-02 crushing season. The study includes measurement of microbial count for Mesophilic bacteria, Leuconostoc, Yeast & Molds as well as general parameters such as purity drop, Rise in RS per 100 brix as well as per 100 pol. The effect of different biocides on these parameters is discussed in this article.
