During the past ten more years, a variety of dihydroagarofuran sesquiterpene polyol esters have been caracterized from the Chinese Celastrus plants in our group, some of which demonstrated important insecticidal and/or insect antifeedant activities. A preliminary activity/structure relationship studies suggested that compounds with multihydroxyls at C-1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12 generally exhibit high insecticidal activity. However, only one synthetic procedure for them has been developed up to present, which included 19 steps of reactions and thus is of no practical use. In our recent synthetic efforts, research interesting was focussed on searching for a short and efficient procedure for synthesis of this kind of compounds, and here we present a method which was based on the choice of alpha-(-)-santonin as starting material because of the easy generation of multiple hydroxyls from its multi-functionality as well as its readily availability from nature.
