In Indonesian Food Act 1996, there is no article on functional food. The functional food related article is on food additives (Article 10,11 and 12). Food supplement (including functional food) registration is less complicated compare to those of pharmaceuticals. New regulation on marketed herbal medicines that will be classified into Jamu, standardized extracts/preparations and phytopharmaceuticals may affect the development of functional food. Business on functional food is mixed with those of traditional or herbal medicines. Due to economic crisis business on functional food have been increasing on line to the development of herbal medicines. In addition to the existing industries, many new small medium industries do functional food business. Safety concerns have been raised about some functional foods, especially foods containing added medicinal herbs. Concern have been raised about the possibility that the promotion of functional foods may mislead people into thinking that taking them in their diet is more important than choosing a balanced diet or taking other steps to prevent or treat health problems. Exaggerated claims for some functional foods and inconsistent regulations may contribute to consumer confusion. Community education and information on functional food are needed. Consuming functional food as self-medication and preparing their own diet is larger than those of prepared by functional food manufacturers. As an illustration the development of functional food in Indonesia search and development of functional foods from local vegetables, fruits, spices and traditional foods will be described.
