The integration of future powertrain, chassis and comfort functions introduces new aspects into the design of vehicle electric systems. In addition, legislation and customer requirements for reduced emissions and low fuel consumption drive automotive manufacturers to minimize CO_2 emissions with the introduction of new powertrain concepts. In this light, the complex control of on-board electricity generation and energy storage becomes increasingly important. This paper evaluates the need for advanced Energy Management in passenger cars with conventional, Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrains. Based on the driving factors for fuel consumption and emission reductions, promising powertrain functions that impact the powernet design are described. These include engine idle removal by stop/start operation, regenerative braking, and operating point optimization with improved control of the generator or ISG. For two powertrain application examples, it is shown that these new functions require a re-design of the powernet hard- and software to guarantee robustness of the electrical system. Since the function requirements towards the battery or energy storage system will change for future powertrain concepts, non-conventional storage systems are briefly described. It is shown that the benefits of improved powertrain functionality in terms of fuel consumption and emissions need to be set-off against the on-cost for increased battery life cycle requirements.
