The purpose of this study is to investigate hotel general managers' demographic characteristics and career paths in China's indigenous hotels. The findings of 104 general managers in China's Guangdong Province indicated that majority general managers in China's indigenous hotels were between ages of 31-51, predominantly males with three-year vocational college education and trained in either a hospitality/business related major or totally non-business related major. Over the past 20 years, the career paths have been changed between younger and older generation of hotel general managers in China. The career paths of younger general managers showed more similarities with their counterparts on the international market than the older generation in China. However some unique differences were identified in the study. General Managers in China pursued their career paths through diversified departmental experiences. On an average, they worked in over 3 different departments, and then spend about 2 years as an assistant general manager before being a general manager. Experience in Sales & Marketing and Human Resources reported particularly important to qualifying them to be general managers, followed by the experience in the operational areas such as front desk, housekeeping and food& beverage. Experience in accounting and engineering would less likely lead then to the general manager's position. This research has practical applications for hospitality corporations and researchers to gain better understanding of China's hotel general managers who play a critical role in the success of a hotel.
