In order to carry out large-scale, low cost cultivation of kenaf in Niigata Prefecture, an area with warm weather, also snowfall, a system for the mechanized cultivation of kenaf was developed involving the use of tractors as the main machine. This system is based on the experience gained from previous mechanized cultivation systems. Using this system, all steps from tillage operations to harvesting were carried out by machine. Problems encountered using the system were studied and solved during four periods of operational trial, starting from 1999. As a result shows the possibility of mechanizing kenaf cultivation. The tilling was carried out with a plow or a rotary tiller. If the residual stumps of the preceding crop are not well buried, the seeding will be affected. For seeding, a seeder with a fertilizer spreader was used. For weeding, weed killers were not used. Instead, a tractor-mounted weeder and ridger were used so that weeding was mechanized. However, it was not possible to remove all of the weeds using mechanical means. A forage harvester was used for harvesting. Harvesting operations were carried out in late November when most of the kenaf leaves had fallen. However, in this area, this time of the year also coincides with the first snow. The weather change causes fluctuation of moisture content of the kenaf making it difficult for storage. In order to use natural drying, the crops were left in the field through the winter and harvested in the coming April. By this time, the kenaf has withered and the drying process has progressed so that the kenaf can be baled and stored. No problem has been observed for the quality of the pulp materials obtained from kenaf left in the field over winter season.
