The aim of our study is to describe processes that researchers can use to create knowledge through subjective and personal aspects of experiencing failure. The following procedures were used to achieve this goal: (1) construction of individual knowledge models for each of 13 team members on four R&D projects that had run into serious problems, using a PAC (personal attitude construct) analysis, which is based on cluster analysis and interpretative analysis; and (2) hierarchical analysis, in which research managers' knowledge models were compared to those of researchers. Using these procedures, we found that R&D concepts are reconstructed during a project based on experiences of failure. This process occurs in three stages: awareness of questions based on the experience of failure, generation of answers, and practice answers. We call this process the "Knowledge Reconstruction Process". We also found that highly capable research managers tended to manage the process of knowledge reconstruction well.
