Scanning-Force Microscopy is a relatively new and important tool for examination of materials as they interact with their environment. The ability to perform these studies in real time and to observe their responses to changes in their environment complements many other surface-sensitive methods. In this paper, dissolution and growth studies of calcite provide examples of both kinetic and thermodynamic information that can be gained when making measurements in an aqueous environment, sometimes as a function of time. The relationship between the shape of pits formed at equilibrium and step energies, the influence of solution flow on the shape of "deep" pits, and the epitaxial growth of a Mn-rich calcite phase are discussed.
