Most project managers that are engaged for the first time in designing and fabricating experiment hardware that is intended for space flight on a manned vehicle, are not familiar with the concepts of Systems Safety and the major impact the safety requirements related to manned space flight can have on their project. These requirements go beyond those that are normally associated with experiment performance in the space environment. The basic concepts of Systems Safety, and how they must be incorporated into the hardware design and fabrication effort in order to comply with these requirements will be explained.
