The food-service/sales sub-segment of the commercial sector consists of convenience stores, restaurants, franchises, bars, grocery stores, meat markets, etc. Collectively, these facilities comprise a large component of the U.S. economy, vital to our modern "on the move" society. While large grocery stores and chain restaurants have addressed energy management and demand response (DR), only a handful of these organizations have implemented DR. These large organizations comprise only a small fraction of the food-service industry-there are tens of thousands of food-service facilities with peak monthly demands in the 50-kW to 120-kW range that can benefit from DR. An ideal solution is an energy management system (EMS) that focuses on reducing the power demand of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, end-uses that can contribute 40 to 60% of a food-service/sales facility's electricity demand. Advanced EMS units are available that can both (1) reduce monthly peak demand by 10 to 15% of total facility, and (2) accomplish an additional ~10-kW reduction during DR control events.
