The purposes of this study is to determine the effective thermal conductivity (K_(ef)) of packed beds of grainsand powder of foxtail millet, with mean Sauter diameters of 1.68 and 0.215 mm respectively. The transientline source technique was applied for measuring K_(ef), because this transient state method allows fastmeasurements, thus avoiding problems related to moisture migration. Thermal conductivity of the grains wasobtained at a moisture content of 13% (dry basis),, and for powders it was obtained in a range of moisturecontent from 13 to 30 % (d.b.), and of bulk density from 0.595 to 0.773 g/cm~3 (corresponding to voidfractions from 60 to 35%). The technique used for measurement of K_(ef) provided consistent and reproducibleresults, for both grains and powder. At a void fraction of 35%, K_(ef) was 0.089 W/m.K for the packed-bed ofgrains. Regarding the packed-bed of powder, K_(ef) increased with the increase of bulk density and of moisturecontent. At a void fraction of 35% and moisture content of 13% (d.b.), K_(ef) was 0.104 W/m.K.
