This paper focuses on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) which benefits from the advanced features and affordances of mobile devices to support and boost learner-driven, situated, collaborative learning experiences within authentic contexts. Based on this premise, we investigate the need for teachers to be meaningfully engaged in building m-learning content to fit their learners differentiated needs and to respond to curriculum requirements. For this, a design-based research was conducted by addressing a needs-analysis questionnaire to a representative number of teachers in order to define their attitudes towards the pedagogical value of mobile learning and of the potential use of mobile applications for teaching. This analysis along with a literature review on the field, defined the necessary instructional design principles for creating an educational mobile application for real teaching/learning environments. On a practical level, this research led to the production of Class Project Assistant (www.classprojectassistant.com) a prototype, mobile app for designing, managing and assessing school projects. The overall aim of the app's evidence-based development is to motivate the new literacy model so as for both teachers and students to be active problem-solvers, better critical thinkers, communicators and producers of their own learning.
