Many aspects of households’ motivation to participate in demand side flexibility are not wellunderstood. This paper provides an evaluation of Finnish households’ acceptance of hypotheticalcontracts and services aimed at increasing demand side flexibility. We conduct a ChoiceExperiment to analyze households’ willingness to offer flexibility via timing their electricityusage and heating; their interest in dynamic contracts such as real-time pricing, two-rate tariffs orpower-based tariffs; and how emissions reductions affect their choices. Results indicate thathouseholds’ sensitivity to restrictions in electricity usage is greater than their sensitivity torestrictions in heating. Households also require compensation in order to choose real-time pricingover fixed fees. The findings suggest that there is room for new dynamic distribution contracts,such as the power-based tariffs, in the market. Furthermore, there are other value creatingelements besides monetary compensation that could incentivize households to offer demand sideflexibility, since they value power system level reduction in CO_2 emissions. Minor emissionsreductions, however, are not necessarily sufficient to activate households to participate in demandresponse.JEL class
