This paper has been written in order to present a method for the reinforcement of sound insulation in low frequency of an engine enclosure harmonically excited by airborne noise. Two different active control methods have been used to control the sound radiated by the engine enclosure. First of all, experiments were carried out by performing the minimization of sound pressure at a certain point, either inside or outside the enclosure. Second, the active control is achieved by altering the vibration characteristics of the structure. The successful method consists of minimizing the total sound power radiated by the five sides of the enclosure by modifying the vibration characteristics of the metallic structure. A quadratic expression of the sound power is calculated in terms of the distribution of the surface velocity of each side of the structure. The sound insulation of the enclosure is examined according to the modal analysis of the structure with and without active control and we observe that the maximum decrease is obtained in a frequency band in which the first modes have a dominating part in radiation.
