A huge variety of new tools and applications are now available as a result of the exponential development of the sciences of genetics and biochemistry combined. Genomics is the modern word for the science and technology that deals with DNA, the code of life. Some 150 years ago Darwin came up with the principle of natural and artificial selection. Some years later, in the 19th century Mendel discovered the inheritance of simple genetic traits. The discovery of DNA as the molecular basis of genes by Watson & Crick in 1953 finally laid the foundation for the DNA technologies that were largely developed from the 1980's onwards.
