This paper reports the results of gas-nitriding stainless steel substrates and study of the effect of substrate structure on the nitrided layers. The differences in the growth of the layers on austenitic and ferritic substrate were studied. The microstructure and phase composition of the layers were investigated using light microscopy analysis (LM), X-ray diffraction (XRD and GXRD) and electron micro-probe spectrometry (EMPS). The microhardness of the layers was studied. The influence of the steel substrate on layer formation was observed in low temperature (below 550°C) nitriding. Above this temperature the substrate influence was of minor importance.
