Treatability Evaluation for Chlorinated Propanes and Ethanes in Groundwater under Reductive Dechlorination Treatments

Background/Objectives. Soil and groundwater at a former chemical facility has been impacted by chlorinated solvents including carbon tetrachloride (CT), 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (DCP), 1,2,3-trichloropropnae (TCP) and chlorinated organic pesticides (COPs) including alpha-benzenehexachloride (BHC); beta-BHC; delta-BHC, dieldrin, and gamma-BHC. The site investigation began in 1985 and has been delineated for active remediation. The site is located in northeastern portion of Georgia’s Coastal Plain physiographic province. The shallow water-bearing unit (from 5 to 45 feet bgs) contains numerous, discontinuous, fine-grained lenses consisting of clay, silty clay, and clayey sand. The shallow groundwater is under semi-confined conditions and is encountered at 5 to 9 ft bgs. For the deep water-bearing unit below 45 feet bgs, coarsergrained, clayey sands, sands, and clayey gravel are encountered with no groundwater confining layer identified. Soil removal was conducted between 1996 and 2006 and consisted of the removal of 40,000 tons of COP impacted soil. The original approach for groundwater treatment was chemical reductive dechlorination with FMC EHC? product modified with higher zerovalent iron (ZVI) content. The approach was selected based on a bench-scale column study showing promising treatment of COPs. A pilot study of injecting modified EHC? slurry in the source area was implemented in May 2013.
