Over the last 20 years, pulses have emerged from relative obscurity to become a significant component of the diets of intensively reared and grazing livestock in Australia. The particular pulses employed vary between regions and seasons. The usage isinfluenced by the geographic separation of supply and demand and competition from alternative markets (human foods and exports). The dominant commodities are lupins and peas but the stockfeed industry employs a wide range of pulses and their milling offals. The suitability of the pulses for each animal species varies with the species/variety of pulses but generally they have wide application and ready acceptance when competitively priced.
