摘要

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) was established in 1978 as a Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) cooperative effort to develop the scientific information necessary to protect the health of the American public from exposure to hazardous environmental agents. Cancer is a major cause of debilitation and death in humans and animals and identifying potential human carcinogens in rodent bioassays has been a major focus of the NTP. Animal and human cancers are fundamentally similar and frequently share morphological, biological, and molecular biological features. Animal models are revealing the complexities of carcinogenesis and leading to prevention and cures. This presentation will cover the comparative pathology, molecular biology, andhuman relevance of chemically induced liver, intestinal, and vascular tumors in rodents from NTP studies, as well as the utility of genetically modified mice in screening for carcinogens.
