Fabrication of thin ceramic membranes by electrodeposition

Thin films of La{sub}0.8Sr{sub}0.2Ga{sub}0.875Mg{sub}0.125O{sub}(3-x), yttria stabilized zirconia, and (Ce{sub}0.8Gd{sub}0.2)O{sub}19 were prepared by electrodeposition. Two cathodic deposition processes were used: electrophoretic and electrolytic deposition. Deposits were obtained on Ni foils, porous Ni-yttria stabilized zirconia cermets and La{sub}0.8Sr{sub}0.2Co{sub}0.2Fe{sub}0.8O{sub}(3-δ) substrates prepared by tape casting. The influence of solvent, dispersant and binder on deposition efficiency was studied. Deposition yield was evaluated under various experimental conditions. The problem of electrodeposition of dense ceramic layers on porous substrates was addressed by the use of intermediate organoceramic layers. Electrodeposition was utilized for fabrication of anode and cathode supported fuel cells.
