A dual biokinetic-metabolic model linking primary and secondary metabolisms for in vitro plant cells is under development. A first model (A) describing the primary metabolism was developed using carrot hairy roots as model system. This model A relates cells' growth to their nutritional status in inorganic phosphate (Pi), (NO{sub}3){sup}- and carbohydrates. Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle) hairy roots which produce valuable secondary metabolites such as the antimitotics vinblastine and vincristine compounds used to cure breast and leukemia cancers has been considered for the development of a structured model B describing secondary metabolism. An approach is presented on a potential way to link the cells' nutritional status to the production of major secondary metabolites.
