Vitamin E and selenium (Se) are essential micronu-trients for humans and animals. Both are involved in the protection of biological membranes against lipid peroxidation, but Se as a component of glutathione peroxidase is also critical in the cytoplasma of the cell. Although there is a shared relationship in their biological functions and they have common deficiency symptoms, there are dietary requirements for both nutrients independent of each other. Most dietary inclusions of vitamin E are as the acetylated synthetic form of alpha-to-copherol (i.e., all-rac-a-tocopheryl acetate or previously known as dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate).
