Optimising Boarding and De-Boarding Processes with AENEAS

Having participated in establishing new guidelines for evacuation analyses at IMO, Germanischer Lloyd and TraffGo developed the software tool AENEAS which can be used to address this task. It was certified to comply with the IMO guidelines by the German maritime administration in September 2002. Apart from evacuation simulations, AENEAS is also well suited for the simulation of everyday situations on board ships. In order to explore further applications, Germanischer Lloyd gathered information about passenger interchange during the boarding and de-boarding phase of a high speed catamaran in the Port of Hamburg. The data is used to verify simulations for various scenarios, in order to evaluate the fastest procedure. This paper briefly presents the model implemented in AENEAS, examines its application to realistic boarding and de-boarding scenarios, and compares simulation results to real data with a view to optimising passenger flows.
