Manufacturing industries such as automotive industry are required further shortening of product development time and product quality improvement for surviving in fierce competitive environment augmented by globalization. Parametrics used in product shape modelling is regarded as one of the promising technologies for shortening time required in each design process and also for supporting strong association between processes which is essential for reducing total product development time. This paper will discuss the following topics: (l)Technical foundation of today's Parametrics and typical applications (2) Summary of future issues regarding technical foundation of Parametrics (3) Some proposals for improving technical foundation (4) Status of Parametrics standardization within ISO/STEP framework.
