Understanding of the pathogenesis of HTLV-I infection and. analysis of the effects of treatments and vaccines is limited by the lack of suitable animal model systems permissive for virus replication and pathogenic effects. Tax transgenic mice provide the most useful animal model to date for studies of the step-wise events involved in tumorigenesis. The breadth of mouse genetic models, extensive panels of mouse monoclonal antibodies, and advances in mouse tumor biology and transplantation provide powerful tools for understanding the role of Tax in lymphoproliferative disease.
