The conventional "dry-tomb type" sanitary landfill are designed and constructed to eliminate problems of groundwater contamination associated with open dump waste disposal. However, very little consideration is given to the application of Sustainable Development principles during the design, construction and operation stages of landfill development. This paper deals with a sustainable landfill technology, the Sustainable Biocell, which is a holistic approach to waste disposal; with energy recovery, methane emission control, minimization of groundwater contamination and space recovery as some of the benefits. The Calgary Biocell is a full-scale facility and the first of its kind in which the three processes, anaerobic bioreactor, anaerobic bioreactor and mining, are applied in a single landfill cell. The operation of the Biocell as an anaerobic bioreactor enhances methane production, while the aerobic phase enhances west decomposition to a point where it could be mined in a third stage for resource and space recovery; thus making the landfill operation sustainable. This paper outlines details of the design, construction and operation as well as the research questions being addressed within the context of the Biocell project.
