A state-space formulation of a structure-acoustic system is derived, which shall be used to perform simulations of active noise control systems. It is based on variational formulations of the structure equation of motion and the acoustic wave equation, which are coupled with each other. A so-called direct formulation of the coupled problem results in unsymmetrical matrices of the second order system of partial differential equations. This system is transformed into first order form, which directly leads to the state equation. After a modal transformation/condensation one gets the state equation in modal or canonical form. This approach is applied to a cavity being enclosed by a sandwich cylinder. The basis functions are derived from the closed form solution of the problem and are a combination of trigonometric and Bessel functions. The eigenvalue solver allows to calculate the coupled modes very accurately. However the eigenvalue problem only can be solved for the lowest modes, since the frequency is contained in the basis functions (transcendental functions included in the characteristic polynomial). Active structure noise control (ASNC) is applied using an linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller. Actuation is realised by radial forces on the cylinder. Acoustic pressure and velocity are observed. The results show promising noise reductions with reasonable control forces.
