The process of visual signal transduction takes place in the outer segment organelle of vertebrate photoreceptor cells. Outer segments are built from a stack of membranous discs surrounded by a plasma membrane. Plasma membrane of the outer segment performs a large array of important functions, ranging from generating light-evoked electrical signals to interacting with other cells during the ever-going process of outer segment regeneration and renewal. Despite our deep understanding of visual signaling, we know surprisingly little about the molecular mechanisms underlying other functions of the outer segment plasma membrane. One impeding factor is our limited knowledge of this membrane's protein composition. Here, we utilized protein correlation profiling to identify unique protein components of the photoreceptor outer segment plasma membrane.
