The Yamate tunnel operated by Metropolitan Expressway Company Limited, Japan, is around 18 km long with heavy traffic. The air temperature in the tunnel tends to get high due to exhaust from the passing vehicles. This leads to a serious problem, especially in the summer, when the outside temperature is high. So, countermeasures have been adopted, like drawing fresh air from outside into the tunnel and/or operating water misting devices. Meanwhile, we developed a numerical method to predict the air temperature rise in the tunnel to respond quickly to the variation of traffic accompanied by changes of surrounding circumstances. This paper presents the techniques to control the air temperature in the Yamate tunnel and the numerical formula to predict the temperature rise.
