For the purpose of investigating the trend oftoughness versus variation of microstructual constituents foran experimental ultra-low carbon bainitic steel, theexperiments (with and without prior deformation) have beencarried out on a Gleeble 1500 machine. The charpy impactspecimens were prepared from the samples treated by theGleeble machine. The impact absorbed energy for toughnesswas measured, and the corresponding fractographs, opticalmetallographs and transmission electron micrographs havebeen examined. The result shows that the prior deformation ofaustenite promotes the formation of intragranular non-parallelplates of acicular ferrite but stifles the formation of sheak-likeparallel plates of bainitic ferrite. Furthermore, the studyemphasizes that the microstructure containing a high volumefraction of acicular ferrite possesses better toughness than themicrostructure containing mainly bainite.
