This paper describes a comparative study between two series of variant structural designs for the NFR-90 frigate with simplified structural styles. One series uses a reduced number of stiffeners, resulting in heavier scantlings overall. The other uses cheaper stiffener profiles than the traditional long-stalk tee bars. Structures of equivalent strength were developed for each variant, which were then subjected to a simulated underwater explosion attack. The resulting internal acceleration environment in each model was assessed and compared. The cost saving over the traditional naval structural practice offered by each variant was also estimated, allowing for a comparison of cost and performance impact of each variant. The paper concludes that, when building to Lloyds Naval Ship Rules, the use of offset bulb plates can offer improvements in cost, weight and shock response accelerations compared to tee-bars or flat bars. Additionally, moderate reductions in stiffener numbers compared to traditional warship design styles can offer reductions in cost, weight and shock response accelerations.
