Questions about the distribution of colloidal particles in drying films have motivated modelling and experimentation in recent years. From a practical perspective, there is interest in how to eliminate particle packing at film surfaces and the subsequent creation of a coalesced surface layer or “skin” in a partially dry film. Cryogenic scanning electronic microscopy has enabled a striking direct visualization of the development of heterogeneities in water distribution in drying latex films.
