摘要

The most widely used technique for breast cancer diagnostic is X-ray mammography. However, it has intrinsic drawbacks - it is insensitive to one fourth of cancer cases, is itself carcinogenic and can be hardly applied for patients under 40 years old. Therefore, a lot of effort has been already expended in developing non-invasive optical methods for early diagnosis of breast cancer. The idea of a diagnostic application of optical methods is based on the well known fact that for most types of cancer the absolute and relative concentrations of oxy- to deoxy-hemoglobin (Hb) of malignant tissue differ from that of normal tissue [1]. Since the absorption curves of oxy- and deoxy-Hb are intrinsic different, the optical methods can be used for the detection of pathologic tissue. However, strong scattering of the probing radiation prevents the localization and characterization of pathological inclusions in tissue. Another problem is a considerable natural deviations of the optical parameters in normal tissues of different patients which exceeds the changes in the parameters due to pathological modification of a tissue of an individual [2]. This dictates the necessity of optical imaging to compare the parameters of the normal and pathologically modified tissues of individual patients.
