The Miravalles geothermal field has been generating electricity since March 1994. Unit 1 was commissioned in 1994 (55 MWe), a wellhead unit in 1995 (5 MWe), Unit 2 in 1998 (55 MWe) and Unit 3 (27.5 MWe) in 2000. Unit 5, a 15.5 MWe binary plant, is expected to be in commercial operation in January of 2004. With Unit 5, the installed capacity at the Miravalles geothermal field will increase to 158 MWe. ICE went through a bidding process to select the binary plant to be installed at the Miravalles geothermal field. Prior to the final selection, ICE also evaluated in the same bidding process the possibility of building a second-flash station to utilize the residual geothermal fluids. Based on a cost-benefit analysis, ICE chose the binary plant as the best option to generate energy from residual geothermal fluids. The increase in the installed geothermal capacity, the current status of the Miravalles geothermal field and the characteristics of the chosen binary plant are described in the following sections.
