Adopting the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique to emulsion polymerization has been a long standing focus of our group. Although RAFT polymerization is relatively straightforward in solution and bulk for the "highly" active RAFT agents such as dithioesters, RAFT-derived polymers have proven difficult to control via classical ab initio (i.e. where surfactant micelles are used as mircoreactors for polymerization) and seeded (where prepolymer particles are used as the microreactors) emulsion polymerizations1.
